Hi all,
Does anyone like gothic metal, darkwave, or medieval music? They are my favourite genres of music, so I thought to talk about it in a new topic. I love bands from Nightwish, therion, Tristania or Haggard, to gothic doom bands like Draconian, My dying bride, or Virgin Black. I also like the darkwave goth bands like Dark sanctuary, Blackmores night, or faun. Ok, that's all from me for this poste. Hope this topic will interest you. I'm waiting for your comments here and to make some nice gothic friends.

I like blackmore's night, but I don't know about the other groups you mentioned. It sounds interesting.

I absolutely love Nightwish. Both Tarja and Enette bring to life a sound and style that has often been replicated, but never quite to the same effect. Their lyrics are unique and interesting, and yet not overly morbid and dark like some in the genre. And their symphonic works can easily stand on their own. I don't think there's a single Nightwish song I really don't like, but some of my favorite songs include Sleeping Sun, Creek Mary's BLood, Ghost Love Score, Beauty and the Beast, Meddows of Heaven, 10th Man Down, Over the Hills and Far Away ... I just realized I could go on and on.

That said, While I love that style of music, I'm really not at all a fan of screaming, grunting or growling lyrics. I tollerate them in bands like Epica simply because I love the rest of the music. Give me some great melodies and clean vocals and I'm right at home though. I consider the grunts and the growls to be the rap of the popular music. Every so often a good pop song will come on which is utterly ruined by rap; you tolerate it because in the song somewhere is a pretty decent melody.

I often find some of the balads in these bands to be incredibly well put-together.

On another note however, there is an album by Silenteum called Sufferion-Hamartia Of Prudence, which in spite of some of its vocals tells an interesting story and is among one of the more unique albums I've encounterd, mainly due to the style of its presentation. It's part metal, part audio drama.

Ah, yes. Metal, grindcore, gothic metal, love it! I like Napalm Death, Cattle Decapitation, Cradle of Filth, DragonForce, and loads more. We should compile a zip of all the above bands and their albums and post it to Dropbox. I want to hear more! Whet my appetite?
I also like metal fusions, like jazz, ragae, and lots more!

Hi guys and thank you for answering to my topic. well, first of all, Louissa, you should try besides blackmores night loreena Mckennitt. She's a great artist and I'm sure you like it. From the darkwave medieval I like a bit of Narsilion, or Carved in stone, or Hagalaz runedance, but those are rather underground bands. Ah, and Faun... I forgot about them.
Blind guardian, I like also all of night wish, mostly walking in the air, or ghost love score too, or Higher than hope, Nemo, and Bear grace misery, wish master, and, well, quite many songs. From their folowers, I like mostly a finish band called Amberian dawn, who is quite cool, their songs transmit a certain magic, even though they are not original.
I like also blind guardian, smile, especially the album imagination from the other ide... and iced earth, but well, those bands are playing something else, not gothic. Has someone listened to therion? do you like it? They are among my top ten favourites. Ok, but I'll let what I have to say on this subject for other posts.

ah, silentium yes. I love that album too, especially shame forever mine. I see myself in that song sometimes, but strangely enough, the other silentium albums are not so good, maybe one or two songs for album are good, the others mediocre, but yes, Sufferion is cool.

Post 7 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 14-Oct-2012 19:03:10

I agree about Silentium's other albums completely. But there's something about the Hangman's Lullaby that resonates with me. I don't know why.

I absolutely love Avantasia too, though I don't think they're quite the same genre. Shadow Gallery are also really good, though again, not at all gothic. They tell some interesting stories though.

I really wanted to like Therion, but for some reason I had a really hard time with them. They definately have some good songs, but there was something that just didn't work for me. It's been quite a long time though, and I really don't remember what.

I'm also a big fan of Epica, even though I really can't stand growling in my music. Within Temptation on the other hand always make me smile.

Then there's the Finish metal band Sonata Arctica, another of my all-time favorites. Some of their songs are a bit too ... well, emotional in their lyrics, but their music is almost always wonderful, and they have a lot of songs that have really inspired some of my writing, and not in a bad way.

One of the best things I thought Nightwish has done is release not only songs in which the lyrics have been removed, but also fully orchestral versions of some of their music.

There's this doom metal-ish band from Australia called Mournful Congregation that I really like. They use a lot of acoustic guitars and symphonic keyboards as well as heavy guitars, but the vocals are all growls. Not for everyone. It relaxes me. I know that probably sounds crazy.

Post 9 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 15-Oct-2012 22:36:08

Not all that crazy.

Post 10 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 19-Oct-2012 20:27:07

Any place to obtain free music of this sort?

Post 11 by winter_child (Generic Zoner) on Wednesday, 24-Oct-2012 14:18:33

well, there is on the internet, but I'll write you where on a private mail if you want, or contact me to send you my mail. regarding other things, well, I love growling, and especially growling male and a soprano female Tristania would be an example, well, the older albums at least, or the old theatre of tragedy. I'd recommend to you one of their albumes, called velvet darkness they fear. another band which I absolutely love and it has sort of growling vocals is moonspell. they are from portugal, and, well, I think those fans of the genre heard of them. they are great, and after a period of crap, their newer albums sound great, like those of old. I'd recommend songs like alma mater, Vampiria, full moon madness, mephisto, Night eternal, Scorpion flower, or lycanthrope, this one is newer. Ok, that's all from me for the moment. be back here soon.

Here's my list of bands who i think are gothic though some of them may not be.
Lacuna coil, lunatica, leaves eyes, after forever, REVAMP, Epica, Cradle of filth, evanescence and within temptation.
I don't listen to cradle as much as the others but occationally have those moods lol

Post 13 by winter_child (Generic Zoner) on Thursday, 25-Oct-2012 3:41:48

leaves eyes is very cool. I love her songs. all the bands you mentioned are gothic except lacuna coil who sing something else alltogether on their last albumes, but they started as gothic. Cradle started as a black metal band but are now more or less gothic. and yes, I do the same as you, I listen to them only when in the darker moods, not all the time, smile. I love queen of winter throne, or dusk and her embrace, the older stuff more, but I guess the last one may be cool too, darkly darkly venus adversa I think it's called. however, I didn't keep track of their newer stuff beginning with thornography, and, even though I downloaded the later albums Godspeed on the devil's thunder and the others, I don't know them so well as the old ones

Disembowelment was another good doom metal band. They only made one album unfortunately. Lots of reverb, heavy growls, and Tibetan bells.

Post 15 by winter_child (Generic Zoner) on Friday, 26-Oct-2012 4:35:42

aaah, thanks for telling me. I thought, after the sound of the title tht this was death metal, so currently I haven't downloaded it when I had the occasion, but I'll look after it. has someone heard of draconian? a very good sweedish doom gothic band, and it's worth listening. the songs are somber, but not boring, and besides growling, they have also a female singer. I'll post an youtube link maybe later.

Post 16 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Friday, 26-Oct-2012 5:30:25

There aren't many female growlers out there.

Post 17 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 26-Oct-2012 10:26:56

Archenemy has one. But I haven't a clue if they're goth or not.

Post 18 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Friday, 26-Oct-2012 16:07:25

They're not.

Post 19 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 28-Oct-2012 0:36:05

Kitty has a growling female vocalist.....and she sounds waaaaaay too creepy for me personally.

I have to say in addition to Within temptation, I really love Epica and After Forever, in spite of the growling. Leaves Eyes have some pretty good songs too.

Post 20 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Sunday, 28-Oct-2012 2:03:39

Kittie's not metal, they're radio music.

Post 21 by Shell Script (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 28-Oct-2012 9:52:22

This is true. Now does this Goth metal actually use medieval music modes?

Post 22 by winter_child (Generic Zoner) on Thursday, 01-Nov-2012 14:55:09

yes. they do. and there is a genre of gothic, or related to gothic, called darkwave. it's a mixture of medieval themes and songs with metal. I can recommend from these bands haggard, though they are mostly gothic and not darkwave. From that bands I can name dark sanctuary, elend, Faun, Carved in stone, or In extremo. they maybe not so well known, but their music is cool. German bands are generally good at this mixture of goth medieval music, but also others.
And there's this branch of gothic which goes towards industrial music, like for instance, deathstars, Lamme immortelle or rammstein which I don't like much, but these bands have some good songs too.

Post 23 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Thursday, 01-Nov-2012 16:03:01

Zee Germans make zee best industrial music.

Post 24 by winter_child (Generic Zoner) on Saturday, 10-Nov-2012 6:53:00

indeed. besides, germans have some of the best gothic metal bands too. let's not forget crematory or darkseed, and Haggard are also german. Plus a good doom darkwave band called empyrium... don't know if you heard of them... lacrimosa are also from germany, or, better to say, from switzerland, but their songs are in german.

Post 25 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Saturday, 10-Nov-2012 21:52:46

I like the German-sung metal. And the Europeans in general are more open to use of synthesizers as synthesizers in metal, not just a string bed. I really like the mix they do.

Post 26 by metal angel (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 30-Nov-2012 15:23:13

Not sure if type o negative should be up here or not but am putting them out there

Post 27 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Friday, 30-Nov-2012 21:32:13

Don't see why not, Bloody Kisses and October Rust are phenomenal classics.

Post 28 by winter_child (Generic Zoner) on Monday, 17-Dec-2012 5:36:40

sure. black number 1 is a classic of the genre, and yeah, those two albums are really cool. afterwards, like many bands, they went down and released crap, but the first ones are good. Do you like paradise lost, amorphis or lake of tears? they are also from the old school of gothic metal.

Post 29 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Monday, 17-Dec-2012 14:42:17

I like all of Type O's albums except maybe The Origin of The Feces, which was a fake live album.
